You may ask yourself, does beard oil work or what does beard oil do?
I am writing this about my personal experience with beard oil. My name is Brian Lane, my wife Leah and I started Herban Desert to help people find higher quality skincare. This will go over why I use beard oil, how it helps, and what I look for in beard oils. If you have ever been curious about the benefits to it, I hope this will help fill in some details. I started using beard oil in my early twenties. I thought it would help me to grow a thicker fuller beard. Over time I realized that while it does help nourish your hair, it does not really increase the rate of growth. However, I did realize there were definite upsides beyond it just smelling nice.
Beard oil is really more for your skin under your man mane. It keeps your chin and cheeks hydrated and nourished. I personally have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which while well managed now, does have an unfortunate effect of drying out skin. This leads to beard, scalp, and even eyebrow dandruff. While not being a serious issue, it certainly can be unsightly and lead to self consciousness. This is where beard oil can really, no pun intended, shine.
It depends of course on the formulation, so I will speak to our particular blend. We use light carrier oils like sweet almond. It keeps your hair and skin well hydrated, it also coats and separates individual hairs, which makes them easier to comb as well as give a fuller healthier look.
We use jojoba oil for it's humectant, or hydrating properties. It also has shown some promise in preventing acne. This is really useful of course, when putting any sort of skincare product on your face. It also helps add a lustrous sheen.
Avocado oil helps ward off damage from the elements, as well as from any potential heating sources used, so feel free to win that pirate beard curl competition!
Rosehip oil is another really helpful ingredient. We added this to also help repair from sun damage as well as for its high vitamin A and C content. As folks who live in Arizona, this is a serious consideration for us.
Tea tree oil is a natural anti fungal and anti bacterial. It has been used to treat athletes foot, acne, lice, and a whole host of other conditions throughout history. It also gives a nice scent to our base oil. We actually use this as the only fragrance in our unscented base, Iron Mane.
Our goal with our beard oils was to keep them light for ease of use as well as to keep from feeling like you have a oil slick on your face fur all day. We have multiple scents designed for all different scent preferences. We also have beard balms for longer beards and those who need some hold throughout their day. I have found that our oils have resolved my own dry skin issues, heck I even rub it into my eyebrows at this point after getting the bulk into my beard. I use around 2-3 drops per inch of growth, and find this to be a perfect amount.
